![]() ![]() In 2015, the North America-China Plant Exploration Consortium (NACPEC) conducted an expedition specifically targeting Acer griseum for seed collection with the object of increasing the genetic diversity of plants in cultivation. This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. ![]() Cultivars include the columnar Copper Rocket. It also has spectacular autumn foliage which can include red, orange and pink tones. It is admired for its decorative exfoliating bark, translucent pieces of which often stay attached to the branches until worn away. It is one of many species of maples widely grown as ornamental plants in temperate regions. Cultivation and uses Īcer griseum was introduced to cultivation in Europe in 1901 by Ernest Henry Wilson for the Veitch Nurseries in the UK, and to North America shortly after. The yellow flowers are androdioecious, produced in small pendent corymbs in spring, the fruit being a paired samara with two winged seeds about 1 cm long with a 3 cm wing. The leaves are compound, with a 2–4 cm petiole with three leaflets, each 3–10 cm long and 2–6 cm broad, dark green above, bright glaucous blue-green beneath, with several blunt teeth on the margins. The shoots are densely downy at first, this wearing off by the second or third year and the bark exfoliating by the third or fourth year. The bark is smooth, shiny orange-red, peeling in thin, papery layers it may become fissured in old trees. It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree, reaching 6–9 m (20–30 ft) tall and 5–6 m (16–20 ft) wide, with a trunk up to 70 cm (28 in) in circumference. Acer griseum is found in the Chinese provinces of Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Sichuan, at altitudes of 1,500–2,000 m (4,921–6,562 ft). Please let me know any experiences you have had with this tree.Acer griseum, the paperbark maple or blood-bark maple, is a species of flowering plant in the family Sapindaceae, native to central China. ![]() You will pay more for all Paperbark maples for the reasons mentioned, but they are typically worth it. Cultivars are being developed, and those most noted in the trade are ‘Gingerbread’ and ‘Cinnamon Flake’. They transplant fairly easily, but as always, don’t let them dry out. There is occasional dieback, most likely from a late frost or possible drought stress, but once established, they usually continue to perform very well. Interesting, though, it can grow to be a very large tree in its native habitat in China They are considered utility friendly trees because of their limited height. They are exceptional as accent trees on corners, or street locations with limited above and below ground space. However, in the right location, a clump form can be especially appealing. For street trees, you must specify branch height and specimen form. Most available Paperbark Maples are still grown from seedlings, and the variability in branch structure and form can be frustrating for the grower, as well as the buyer. They can grow in full sun, but are more than happy to be a little protected from the full brunt of sunlight and wind. Otherwise, they never reach close to their full potential. Although periodically used as a street and parking lot tree, they must have well draining soils to prosper in these tough locations. It is very slow growing, and most seem to have their own unique form. Fall color can be from bronze to russet red to bright red, especially if you get a hybrid. This is a perfect small tree with incredibly interesting coppery, curling, and flaking bark, and small trifoliate (3 part) leaves. Paperbark Maple seems to be on everyone’s favorite list for small interesting trees. ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, for the chewy ones just be picky about your Now and Laters and get the originals and make sure they’re super fresh, as in my experience they’re quite soft and chewy if they were produced relatively recently. ![]() ![]() Williams' Black Knight was one of my favorites back in the early 80's and they have it. It's so frustrating to play a pinball machine knowing that you should be able to maneuver the ball to certain places but can't because the coil that's actuating the flipper is just shot. I was excited to find a couple of my favorites, but just couldn't hear them over the din of all the other machines.
